Welcome to the Life of Musicians

BIOGRAPHY

Born just outside of Chicago, and literally from the moment of his birth, music has been a huge part of Derrick’s life. Growing up in the Midwest provided an atmosphere of a large variety of musical styles. His mother, through her constant Gospel singing, instilled in him the full joy of music. His father exposed him to different types of music such as Duke Ellington, Rhythm & Blues, Funk, and County.

SMOOTH JAZZ RADIO

In 1999, Derrick was asked to be the Music Director of Jazz FM 88.5 KSBR, and for two years, this position gave him a chance to deeply understand the artists, dynamics, and the music of the Smooth Jazz Radio industry. He used his talents as the Nation Wide Smooth Jazz Promoter for Pioneer Records, Miramar Records, and Merrimack Records. This includes artist like Al Jarreau, Ricky Lawson, Oleta Adams, Michael O'Neill (a 20 year guitarist for George Benson), and saxophonist, Tom Saviano (Chicago, Earth, Wind & Fire, Sons of Champlin). In addition to creating radio edits for his record company’s artists, he provided radio edits of songs by Ronnie Laws (Holland Group), Michael MacDonald, Michael Frank, and Darrel Strummer (Genesis).

Also, additional recordings and performances were by:

Mark Fowler (bass, vocals)
  Joe Washington (guitar, vocals)
Anthony Brown (drums, vocals)
Carl Kelly (Arranger, Male Vocalist)

Henry Alexander (Flute, Sax)
Robin Raider  (Flute, Sax)
Greg Richardson (Acoustic Guitar)
