Centrals Forumite Gig Review: An Evening of Smooth and Cool Jazz
By Adam Shepherd
(The following is an
edited portion of the original review)
"Last
night I went to a concert at The Huntington Beach Cultural Center
Library theater. First off I have to say how out of place I felt. I
showed up in my Children of Bodom shirt and some semi-grungy jeans while
everyone else was in nice slacks and buttoned shirts."
"Mark Fowler (bassist) said he'd leave me 2 tickets or put me on the guest list. That was really nice of him, but since I'm not struggling and he came to see my band play, I paid for the ticket." "Everyone was standing outside waiting outside the doors and I just figured I'd try going inside and it was open to my surprise. So I just walked in and watched their sound check. Mark Fowler introduced me to the band which was cool and I got to relax while no one else was allowed to come in." "The show started off with Sherman Fowler (who I think was Mark's brother). He sang and played guitar as a solo act. He was a very good player and writer. Some of the music he did was very different, including tapping+slapping(maybe picked up watching his brother?) My favorite song of his was "Everyone Has A Story" and I especially liked the vocal melodies." "Then The Derrick Dixon Group came on stage. They call themselves smooth and cool jazz, but there's definitely a large funk element coming from the bass section. They are an excellent group." "
The piano and keyboard player is Derrick Dixon and from what I
understand he writes most of it.
"The
singer, Carl Kelley, is very good, I could hear he's very into
Gospel."
"The
drummer (Anthony Brown) scared me a couple of times with his rim shots,
they were loud and sharp! He was good and I liked his cymbal work.
The
guitarist (Joe Washington) had a great sound and he had some very cool
leads."
"The bassist (Mark Fowler) was definitely energetic and funky . He slapped and popped like a mad man! It sounded excellent and his playing really filled the overall sound. He had a solo which was just killer and would have made Marcus Miller jealous." "My favorite songs were "Midnight Blue" and the last one, "Stroll", which was really crazy and written by Mark. " "It was a great show and I'm glad I was able to make it on time." *round of applause for everything* |
